Karen Elson and Jack White were married yesterday on the confluence of three rivers — the Rio Negro, the Solimones, and the Amazon — in the Amazon basin in the city of Manaus, Brazil. They were married by a traditional Shaman priest on a canoe at the exact point where the three rivers meet. The bride and groom were accompanied by a small party of close friends. The best man was Ian Montone. Meg White was the maid of honor. The ceremony was immediately followed by a blessing by a priest at a Catholic Cathedral called Igreja Matric in the historical city of Manaus. This was the first marriage for both newlyweds.
Interesting river fact: "The differences between the blackwater of the Rio Negro and the whitewater Amazon are readily apparent where two rivers meet near Manaus, Brazil. The rivers run side by side, clearly distinct as separate white and black water, before blending together after several miles." Cool NASA satellite image of the river confluence/wedding site.
But some cynical Stripes-watchers wondered if the announcement was a hoax, especially since it concludes, “this is the first marriage for both newlyweds” — which isn’t true. In 2003, the Detroit Free Press uncovered a 1996 marriage document between Jack and Meg. They were divorced four years later. White — who romanced Zellweger for two years before her surprise marriage to country star Kenny Chesney last month — also has a new album to promote. He’s in Brazil preparing for a 12-date mini-tour of South and Central America to push “Get Behind Me Satan,” which drops next week. But White’s publicist confirmed the marriage, and sources tell PAGE SIX that Elson had indeed been dating White for about a month. She appears in the video for “Blue Orchid,” the album’s first single, and has lately been telling friends in New York that she’s fallen for the garage rock guru.
Elson seems to have a thing for rock stars — the British-born mannequin previously had a long-term relationship with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. Before that, she dated high-fashion photographer Alexei Hay.
