Why hast thou forsaken me, oh my G****e?
You may have noticed a dearth of blog posts recently. Do not adjust your computers, the problem is on this end. I haven't been posting. Figure I might as well make it official: Daze Reader is on sabbatical. Why now? Lack of motivation in keeping the site updated, caused mainly by money woes, in turn caused by a strange problem with Google. Over four-plus years, Daze Reader had built up a solid ranking and steady stream of traffic from Google. Then on December 17, a date which will live in crappiness, my daily Google traffic dropped by more than 90%. At first I just waited for a correction, but nothing changed. Then I researched the problem at various search engine message boards. My best guess is that Daze Reader has fallen victim to this scam involving bogus 302 redirects. Inquiries to Google about the problem have had no effect. If anything, the problem is getting worse; my Google referrals for March 1-2 were approximately 1% of my average level of last November. This site has become a significant source of income for me. And Google used to account for most of this site's traffic. So this near-total disappearance from Google's listings represents a big short-term financial blow. A smarter businessperson might have recognized the danger in relying too heavily on one revenue stream beyond my control, but "smart businessperson" is one thing I am not. Daze Reader has always been both a labor of love and a business, long before "how to make money from blogging" became a hot topic. Lately it hasn't been much fun either; the financial problems have coincided with a case of "blogger burnout". So I plan to spend the next month or two working on other other projects, updating Daze's design and infrastructure, and trying to resolve my Google problem. Or maybe I'll just get stoned, eat chili cheese Fritos, play Gran Turismo 4, and wallow in self-pity. Either way, it's time to take a break. I have a new email address.
