The Hindustan Times has a photo gallery of Miss Afghanistan, Vida Samadzai, doing the bikini walk at the Miss Earth 2003 pageant (not Miss Earth 200, despite what the sash says) in Manila.
In this shot, Samadzai and an unidentified photographer are both bravely doing their part in the struggle against Islamofascism.
She does not represent Islam, nor does she represent Afghan Women. She is respresents the sluts of the WEST.
Why is someone walking around in a rather modest bathing suit "a slut"? And let me be the first to introduce you to a little subject we like to call "world history." Not only is dressing down, wearing little or --dare I say it -- no clothing -- NOT specific to the "West" --there's no culture on earth that can lay claims to having a monopoly on it. Oppressive regimes formed by people like you who impose the restraints of personal psychosis on society to at large -- and almost always have an insane fear of the naked female body -- try to vilify natural human impulses and pleasures but in general no culture that has at so point in history thrived has not also been kinder to and more accepting of the human body. Miss Afghanistan could have walked down the streets of Baghdad or Damascus in the 12th Century with very little problem -- so ahh -- maybe the problem is with you and with fundamentalism -- which is a far more "modern" and "decadent" form of living that simply taking a stroll in public with nothing but your skivies on.
Although i hate to admit it, i must say that i agree with the second post. Sexuality, modernity, and the usage of women is not specific to the West. It was common practice in many Islamic countries, and it is readily used today. Young girls, as young as 8 and 9 are still used as sex slaves in Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. etc. At least the girls in this pagent are doing it out of free will, and not because they need food for the day. Although i do not agree with VIda's chosen avenue of expressing her liberal views, i am also in no position to condescend on it. We are the masters of our own bodies, whether that means wrapping it in a burqa or strolling down the walkway in a two piece. and for what its worth...she will probably not represent Afghanistan as Miss World because she is pretty damn bad looking.

Well!! I am surprised to see a gurl half naked representing Afghanistan! I would have been proud of Vida if she had done something great like helping the poor and dying children and families of Afghanistan, rather then showing her beautiful flesh to get attention of the world! I agree that gurls in Afghanistan and many other countries are taken as sex slaves however,this does not mean that we should be making the illegal as legal. Vida, all i want to tell you is that by wearing a biking and putting the name of "Afghanistan" on your naked body you are not representing Afghanistan but rather you are wishing to be representing an Afghan gurl. Well, sorry to inform you but you have chosen the wrong way to represent Afghan girl and Afghan culture. Look in the mirror and question yourself, "Am i really representing my culture, my country or my religion" because being an Afghan does not mean being beautiful or daring, but its meaning is bound with the culture, religion, self-respect, etc which you lack!

I'm only fairly young and my world knowledge is fairly limited but I have to say 'Well Done' to this woman for throwing away the unbelieveable restrictions the Taliban imposed on the Afgan people for all those years! I am Australian and am proud to be one. After the state of affairs in Afghanistan and other similar countries was brought to the world's attention after 9/11, I was horrified to think that there were people in this world not treated equally and with the respect they deserve. Once again, good on this woman for exercising her human rights to do what she wants and when she wants to do it!
I know nothing about Muslim religion and therefore can't comment but surely a woman should be able to enjoy some sort of freedom in her life....I think what she has done is something to be proud of and not something to be ashamed of.
That's my piece of mind on the subject and I hope that the Afgan people in the future recognise that women deserve the same treatment and respect that men get every day. I haven't written this post to anger anyone, just to express the view from 1 lonely westerner that heard about 'Miss Afghanistan' and unfortunately found out that the Afgan people aren't supporting her but instead seem to be putting her down.
I personally by looking at her photo feel discussting,she is not presenting any skill rather than exposing her body.

Vida should do what she wants and believe what she wants. Yes she might be brain washed by western culture and so on...but its her view of life and she should keep it that way, she has the right to think for herself just like everyone else.Its non of our business. However, when she has views that are so against the afghan religion and culture and makes it our business. She does not have a right to represent Afghan's and Afghanistan with her views. It's alright to say that is what she believes but it is not ok to associate the whole afghan community with it. She obviously does not care what the Afghan community think of her and why should she care. She obviously is not proud of her own culture if she wants to change it (for the western views which belies womans liberty is walkin around naked). Thats the bit that confuses me if she is not proud of her culture, why do you believe you have the right to represent Afghanistan with your narrow minded views???
I am shocked to see so much ignorance being displayed. The posts which refer to VIda and her family as kafer and go so far as to suggest murder, should have never posted by the administrator. Pride is only seen as honorable when it does not take away from our ability to be human. Vida has obviously upset many Afghans, who feel it is their manly duty to uphold the chasity of their women. But what i find most interesting is that many of these same Pashtuun men (for the most part) have made the prostitution of young afghan girls a lucrative business in Peshawar and Kabul. Is not that a far greater shame for our people and more importantly for our men?? The greater issue at hand however is far above and beyond the issue of ghairat. Her actions are clearly a response to the restrictions placed upon her, and the restrictions were placed by a young, ignorant, regime unable to forsee the social consequences of their haste actions. We have fallen into the social pitfall placed by the regimes who really control our country. we are exactly where the trap intended us to be, alcholol flows freely in our streets, opium trade is on the rise, the majority of imports and exports are controlled by foreign businesses, and to top it all off we have a rise in social problems,,such as our lovely new miss afghanistan. We must also keep in my mind that the duties of maintaining a system in which state and religon are not seperate is not easy, and when foreign powers are prompting social agitation that in some instances (such as this) goes against Islam we have a situation close to the one faced by Muslims during the times of the Ottoman Empire. Through all our trials and tribulations however, it is important to keep a balanced, and fair outlook on things as history is a chain of events rather than instances of single ones.

I think this woman has the courage to do something that most other women would never do--actually let me re-phrase that--most other women can not do. She is representing Afghanistan in a new age. As an Afghan man, I think she has taken a huge step forward for herself and our country. As Afghans, I think we should support her and for the first time not sit back and critisize her.
I could have not put it any better Fatima M. I have lived in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Europe, and now The United States and agree with you 100%. I made a recent trip back to Afghanistan and found myself dismayed by our very own culture and how much we lack motivation, education, and an open minded culture. Afghanistan and our people have lived in the state and conditions that some of these other posts would want them to continue living, and where has it gotten us? We, as Afghans, have always been proud and still continue to think we are invinsible. Let me ask you this...what is it that we are proud of? I for one believe it is time for change and no one could have better symbolized the start of this change better than Vida in her red two peice.

I think that this will give other people a different prospective of an Afghan woman. Watching beauty pagents I've always wondered why isn't there a Ms. Afghanistan? But now that there is i don't think that people should hate on her..i think that we should support her and her decision.

Vida may have thought she could be a key to open freedom for Afghan women, but she may not have thought that not majority of Afghan women think it that way. I believe that Vida should have realized that, even if things are turning around in Afghanistan and Afghanistan is now known as a developing country, it wasn't a good idea to just appear out of nowhere and represent herself in such an unfair way. Afghanistan is an unexplainable country and besides, Afghan women have so many other unique virtues that nobody could ever compete except the one Vida tried to specially represent in her as an Afghan woman.

Vida has made history, eighter good or not. I am noticing that we people are trying to publicize it alot. It has already been written in world's history with bold letters. It would be good to just wait for what is comming next because I have heared that so far, Vida is the leading contestant. PRESIDENT Hamid Karzai's minister for women's affairs yesterday condemned Miss Afghanistan, as Vida Samadzai became the country's first woman in the post-Taliban era to appear in a bikini during a beauty contest in Manila.
"Appearing naked before a camera or television is not women's freedom but in my opinion is to entertain men," Minister Habiba Surabi said.
"We condemn Vida Samadzai, she is not representing Afghanistan's women, and this is not women's freedom."
Surabi said according to Afghan culture women should not demonstrate their worth using their "beauty or bodies" but by their skills and knowledge.
"In the name of women's freedom, what this Afghan girl has done is not freedom but is lascivious," the minister said.
The 25-year-old Afghan contestant, who lives in the United States, is the first Afghan woman in 30 years to participate in the Miss World international beauty contest being held in the Philippines capital this week.
The dark-haired, black-eyed Samadzai, apparently from a Pashtun tribe, was born and raised in Afghanistan but left for the United States in 1996 to escape the extremist Taliban regime which forced women to cover themselves from head to toe.
Under the harsh regime women were not allowed to work outside their homes or go out without a close relative beside them. After the fall of the militia in 2001, an increasing number of women left the burqa, or veil, at home and some took jobs.
The only other Miss Afghanistan was Zohra Daoud, who joined the Miss Universe contest in 1972.

We need to teach our selves the concept of tahweed, who created the trees, the human eye, the brain, mountains, nature. Did co-incidence create it this intricate and complex system? This chair on which i am satting on, i know it did not come together by it self, there must be someone who put it together, i don't how tall or colour the person is, but i know this has been created by some intelligance. There has been no reaction by the Karzai government on the news, which implies that the government is either criminally negligent or condones this act of cultural terrorism. Will normal Afghans tolerate this public display of the beauty of a woman in front of men? Can any Islamic country be represented on these kinds of pageants, which are contrary to Islamic laws? The answer to these questions is obviously no.
So what does the fact that an Afghan women wearing nothing but a skimpy swimsuit and walking in front of thousands of spectators wearing a band stating “Miss Afghanistan” on it tell us? The answer seems to be only that under the American pressure to “de-Talibanize” the country, Afghanistan is loosing its identity as an Islamic nation and it is part of a broader plan to take away the only asset Muslims of these poor countries still have plenty of – and that is honor. Why did the Karzai government not take any legal action to stop the display of Afghan pride being displayed in such an abhorrent manner? It speaks volumes about the real goals of the government that was installed by the Americans.
What do the people who called the Taliban “barbarians” and “medieval” say about the degrading of the Afghan culture by the American installed government? If the Taliban were barbaric towards women, as the western media says, what is the presentation of model wearing minimal clothing in front of thousands of spectators called? Is that not a virtual trading of women as the participation in these events leads to dehumanizing modeling careers for these women and the selling of their bodies in front of cameras for the pleasure of the consumers? Whatever the Taliban did, it was not against the national honor of the Afghans, but this so-called modernization is a direct attack the honor of the Afghans.
At the time that the Taliban left the cities to engage in guerilla war, the western media triumphantly showed the images of men shaving their beards and women walking across the cities of Afghanistan wearing skirts. And these were shown as proof that the war was over and the people of Afghanistan were free from the Taliban. In fact, it was Islam that the Afghans were encouraged to be free of. The majority of men still sport beards, and the majority of women still wear Burqa which shows that Afghans will not give up Islam no matter how hard the West tries to force them to.
The Taliban did not force Afghans to be Muslims. It was the work of centuries of Saints such as Jamal uddin Afghani and descendents of Chingiz Khan who worked to make these once savage barbarians into the flag bearers of Islam. From this area, Islam was spread to the far Central Asian Republics, and became a threat to the Russian empire. Did the Russian empire and then the Soviet Empire not try to eliminate Islam from the Afghans? History is testament to who eliminated who. Now the once Super Power is again threatened the small nation of Chechnya, 1 million times smaller in area than its own country. This speaks volumes about the force that a population packs when it decides to reverse the tide of imperialism armed with only the weapon of Islam. Those once undisciplined Afghans and now the meager Chechens are making the biggest nation in terms of area lick its wounds over and over. Here lies a lesson for the Americans and its allies; it is better not to play with the Afghan populace that is intent on keeping Islam at its source of power.
The conspiracy to destroy the honor of Afghans is clearly shown by the fact that the participant in the pageant lives in Washington D.C. and has been in America for more than seven years. Oddly, she is called Miss Afghanistan, however considering there has never been a pageant for Miss Afghanistan held in Afghanistan, how can she represent the country as Miss Afghanistan?
The pictures of her cat walking in front of thousands of spectators also shows her leading the procession of the participants, as to imply that she leads them all in indecency. Up until now, no official from the government has said any thing with respect to this event. Furthermore, it is unlikely to become an issue for the government because the people who get their salaries from Washington are not likely to anger their paymasters by criticizing an event that fits perfectly with the American plan to “free” the Afghan women.
To begin with, Hamid Karzai functions as the mayor of Kabul more so than the president of the country and whether or not he or his government deplores this act is of no consequence. As long as the warlords keep getting dollars, their honor will remain locked in the dungeons of their hearts, and nothing will come out of it. It is an ugly attempt to present the horrendous Afghanistan ruled by barbaric warlords as a virtual mini Europe in the middle of the Islamic world.
The policies of Taliban can be debated, but their sincerity in restoring the honor of Afghan women cannot be. After years of being traded as commodities under pseudo Mujahideens and communist warlords, the Taliban brought the Afghan women freedom from fear of being raped by a soldier from the local militia, or being taken to different cities as commodities and traded by warlords at their will. Whatever policies the Taliban adopted, the identity of the Afghan people was never compromised and they certainly did not displayed the honor of Afghans on TV for the pleasure of sick minds and animal instincts.
Judging from this latest attempt, it is evident that the Americans want to destroy the Islamic identity of Afghans. It is very hard to separate Islam from the Afghans, as the history of Islam in the area is so old that the Afghan culture is in fact Islam. There are so many different backgrounds and races intermingled in the Afghan culture that with out Islam, there is no Afghanistan. Islam is the cement that holds the jigsaw pieces of races and communities in place. It is impossible to shake these Islamic roots as the Americans are trying to do by imposing their culture on Afghans, which they have discovers outside of Kabul where America is facing extreme opposition.
It is believed by many policy makers in Washington that in order to win the “war on terror” that the mindset of the Islamic world must be changed and they must be forced to adopt the values and morals of the western world. It is ironic that while the civil liberties of the Americans are being curtailed increasingly by the law enforcement, Americans are breaking all chains on people in the countries it takes over. Today it is trying to turn Afghans into immoral people who are glad to see their women being shown off on TV, exposing their bodies in an ugly scene of modern day sex slavery. Tomorrow it will try the same on Iraq, while its proxies in Egypt and Pakistan are busy imitating their masters by dispensing with moral guidelines placed on their media companies, and encouraging their citizens to enjoy immoral holidays such as Valentine’s Day.
In the end, presenting the Afghan dignity in front of thousands of spectators in semi nude dress should be condemned by every one, including all those who were somehow turned into the leaders of rights for the women of Afghanistan after the American government declared war on the Taliban. Wearing a Burqa is infinitely better than being displayed on a stage as a consumer commodity and later on being used to sell products using their sex appeal to customers.

If a large stone were thrown into the hell, it will take seventy yrs to reach its bottom. Any person subjected to least punishment in hell, shall have shoes of fire on his feet and by their heat its brain will be boiling like a kettle on fire and he will feel that his punishment was the severest and none else would be having the same.”
I am not saying that u guys are going to hell, but all I am trying to that life is too short, we should try, at least try to be good Muslims rather then being one of those people who follow Shaitan. i met her personally on one of the candidates activities here in manila.. Of course the whole Philippines were shocked when we heard that theres gonna be Miss Afghanistan in the annual Mis Earth here in Manila. I actually thought it was a joke, but it wasnt. Vida Samadzai, an afghan who wanted to make a difference in this world, condemned by her countrymen back home. Being condemned by her own countrymen is her motivation to do well on this pageant. She's one of the popular girls not because of the global issues she had brought to this pageant but of her courage to fight for what she believes. Shes very intelligent. At first, i didnt really want to ask her opinion about afghans back home but she mentioned something about "theyre my inspiration..." and those words WOW-ed me. Muslims here in the philippines are also against to what she is doin. but she is tryin her best to prove those people who criticize her wrong. For me, its just like Miss Turkey represented (and turkey is a muslim country). People in this forum said that joining a beauty pageant is just for slutty girls? Mind you, not all girls are given this opportunity to have a platform to express our thoughts as a woman, and what we can do. Yes, there are other ways to accomplish that but beauty pageants are not about showing off our bodies, its all about making people appreciate women as a whole. Western beauty pageants continue to take cheap shots at Islam

The streets of Nigeria descended into anarchy last year when the organisers of the Miss World competition decided to host the finals in Abuja. The arrival of such a competition in the Muslim lands sparked widespread protests, which resulted in hundreds of deaths. The competition slowly became a platform by which many took the opportunity to attack the Islamic hudoods (divine punishments). The Miss France committee withdrew their contestant from the competition saying: “The Miss France committee is joining the protests against Nigeria, which condemns women to death for adultery. These sentences are barbaric and unacceptable.” Despite the uproar caused by these sentiments, it would seem that the organisers of such pageants still have much to learn.
In this years ‘Miss Earth’ competition, Afghanistan will be sending a participant for the first time in over 30 years. Vida Samadzai, 25, has lived in America for the last seven years and will be competing alongside 60 other contestants from around the world in this year’s final, to be hosted in Manila. Samadzai said “I would like to make people aware that, as Afghan women, we are talented, intelligent and beautiful. Now, women can go to school, go to work, they're free. They don't have to wear those long burqas anymore.”
It is clear that the West, and those influenced by the western culture, continue to use such pageants as a springboard for attacking Islam. Earlier this month the cosmetic giants Revlon and MAC, pledged to help an American aid project set up beauty salons in Kabul. The project is aimed at training Afghani women in the art of hair cutting and beauty. Mary MacMakin, who inspired the project, said: “These women have been tortured, abused and oppressed. To have other women work on them and touch them is a wonderful thing to achieve, but at the same time you can show them ways to gain economic independence.”
It’s clear that the western world continues to propagate its lethal cocktail of freedoms to the Muslims. In doing so they adopt a number of differing styles and means, although the basic undercurrent always remains the same – to present their value system as being superior to the Islamic one. This is something that Allah (SWT) warns us about:
æóáóä ÊóÑúÖóì Úóäßó ÇáúíóåõæÏõ æóáÇó ÇáäøóÕóÇÑóì ÍóÊøóì ÊóÊøóÈöÚó ãöáøóÊóåõãú
“And the Jews and Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their millah (way of life).” [TMQ Al-Baqarah:120]
Yet how can the West claim to offer a superior criterion for action when they make the basis of action the pursuit of pleasure? This endless pursuit of sensory gratification has produced misery for the millions and pleasure for the few. Consider that 70% of American wives commit adultery in the first 5 years of marriage; or that 167 women are raped everyday in the UK; or that a woman is battered every 18 seconds in the US. There are hundreds of thousands more who suffer from depression, or eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia. These statistics reveal that the West is unable to regulate the relationship between men and women effectively, and gives people ideals and aspirations that are unachievable. Therefore, we must refer to Allah (SWT), the Creator of mankind, about how best to live our lives. He (SWT) said:
ÃóáóÇ íóÚúáóãõ ãóäú ÎóáóÞó æóåõæó ÇááøóØöíÝõ ÇáúÎóÈöíÑõ
"Should not He Who has created know? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves) All-Aware (of everything)." [TMQ Mulk:14]
Despite the West’s relentless onslaught against Islamic values, especially against Muslim women, we must remember that Allah (SWT) is the one who has given women honour, maintained their dignity and elevated their status. He (SWT) warned the men against making women mere objects of desire, which in the West this is the prevalent attitude that is epitomised by these beauty pageants. He (SWT) warned:
Þõá áøöáúãõÄúãöäöíäó íóÛõÖøõæÇ ãöäú ÃóÈúÕóÇÑöåöãú æóíóÍúÝóÙõæÇ ÝõÑõæÌóåõãú Ðóáößó ÃóÒúßóì áóåõãú Åöäøó Çááøóåó ÎóÈöíÑñ ÈöãóÇ íóÕúäóÚõæäó æóÞõá áøöáúãõÄúãöäóÇÊö íóÛúÖõÖúäó ãöäú ÃóÈúÕóÇÑöåöäøó æóíóÍúÝóÙúäó ÝõÑõæÌóåõäøó
“Tell the believing men to lower from their gaze and to protect their private parts. That is better for them, Allah knows the details of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower from their gaze and protect their private parts” [TMQ An-Nur: 30-31].
Hence Allah (SWT) and his Messenger (SAW) established the correct basis for action amongst the believers. The basis of action in Islam is not shallow and primitive like it is in the West. The Islamic basis for action is a far more enlightened premise – the laws of Allah (SWT). This is because man has limited knowledge and may therefore employ all the faculty of his mind but still arrive at an incorrect conclusion. By contrast, Allah (SWT) has perfect knowledge on all affairs and He (SWT) created man – thereby knowing what is best for him. He (SWT) said:

“It may be that you hate something and it is good for you and it may be that you like something and it is bad for you, Allah knows and you do not know” [TMQ Al-Baqarah: 216].

A Tribute to the New Face of Afghan Women

In 1946, the U.S. government used Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands to test the atomic bomb. In Paris, in the same year, engineer Louis Reard quietly unveiled a swimsuit of the same name--bi, from the Latin word meaning “two,” and kini, meaning "square inches of Lycra." Today, in Manila, the two-piece swimsuit is causing a different kind of explosion, but in similar atomic proportions.
Twenty-six years after the bikini had been invented and two years after the fall of the Taliban, a bikini-clad woman caused both interest and confusion in international media for wearing a bikini. She is Vida Samadzai, a 25-year old Afghan from the Pashtun tribe, representing her country in the Miss Earth competition in Manila, Philippines. The moment Vida sauntered into the poolside of Manila Intercontinental for the ME 03 Press Presentation (see photo above), lovely tresses flowing freely and long legs striding gracefully into the eye of international scrutiny, flashbulbs from innumerable cameras feverishly went into a tizzy, photographing the first ever Afghan representative in an international beauty pageant. Vida, wearing a flaming red two-piece swimsuit, was practically on fire, and she radiated this warmth to everyone who had the good fortune to witness the birthing of the new face of Afghan women.
Such was the furor caused by Vida’s appearance that Afghanistan’s Washington bureau was compelled by the badgering media to issue a statement: The government of Afghanistan is not endorsing Vida’s presence in Miss Earth. At home, the Minister for Women’s Affairs echoed similar sentiments, going as far as condemning Vida: "Appearing naked before a camera or television is not women's freedom but in my opinion is to entertain men," Minister Habiba Surabi said.
Despite the lack of support from her own countrymen, Vida continues to strongly compete in Miss Earth, fighting a battle that most pageant contestants cannot even begin to imagine. Vida is revolutionizing the image of Afghan women.
After the now-famous swimsuit photo appeared, Vida again donned a skin-baring black gown for the preliminary evening gown competition. The jewel-encrusted black number hugged Vida’s body in a manner not by any means vulgar, but elegant. It was as if Vida herself belonged to the starry night sky.
Then came the Heaven on Earth Halloween Party for the Miss Earth candidates. Vida shone through yet again with another epiphany—she came as a colorful bird, and every moment she looked as if she was raring to fly. She was indeed in flight—like the bird she represented, Vida was a vision of carefree freedom. It was as if she was making up for all the time the women of Afghanistan were denied color by the Taliban. Even the color of their burqas was regulated to prevent “frivolity.” As a form of protest, some Afghan women began wearing lipstick under their veils. Now that the Taliban has fallen, Vida and the other women of Afghanistan are free to be as colorful as they wish.
Finally, Vida wore a festive tribal ensemble for the National Costume competition. Glowing in a deep purple dress with glorious gold patterns, Vida was a vision of a happy Afghan woman—sexy, free, and secure in her femininity. Finally, yes, there is nothing—or nobody—to be afraid of.
Vida—how apt, indeed, that her name should suggest life itself. No matter how much flak Vida receives from her government, Afghanistan is lucky to be worthily represented by Vida. Never mind matter if wearing bikinis is nothing new to the rest of the world; the fact that Vida wore one is, in itself, a gift to womanity. Vida’s participation in a such a celebration of international understanding and environmental awareness as Miss Earth is, in fact, her offering to humanity.
Truly, Vida is a beautiful woman—every inch a woman of the earth.

I met Vida when competed in my pageant - Miss America International Pageant last year and was third runner up. The winner of the pageant goes on to compete in the Miss Earth Pageant.
It was MY idea to send in Vida Samadazai - Miss Afghanistans
application to the Miss Earth Organization to see if they would
accept her as Miss Afghanistan.
And the Miss Earth Organization said yes!..................................
I told Vida we should send in her application because it was her LAST YEAR
to compete in the pageant and they already had a girl
representing the USA in the pageant.
It was nothing more than to get a chance to compete in the pageant
and bring awareness to enviromental issues.
Travel and meet other girls from other countries. FUN! This was by no means suspose to be a political statement!......................................
This has been done many times in various pageants
with other girls who want to try and compete in a
National or International Pageant........................
To give you an example: Porntip - Miss Universe 1988 was born and raised in Pasadena, California. She competed in the Miss California USA pageant several years but did not win. Because her mom and dad were born and raised in Thailand, she could get a Thai Passport so she decided to compete in the Miss Thailand Pageant and won. She did not even speak Thai. She then went on to compete in the Miss Universe as Miss Thailand and then became Miss Universe 1988! Of course some of the people of Thailand complained that she was not Thai but she did go on and as Miss Universe was able to raise thousands of dollars for the poor in her country.............................................
Vida qualified to represent Miss Afghanistan because she not only was born in Afghanistan, she lived there for 15 years! She is educated and speaks 5 languages fluently including Afghan. She and her family left Afghanistan to get away from the Communists that were starting to take over the country. Vida has a current Afghan passport from Afghanistan and members of her family have been back there several times to help the refugees. ................................................
In regards to Vida, Miss Afghanistan appearing in a Bikini... .................
Well, I never thought that it would be a problem or a issue
because there was a Miss Afghanistan 1972
whom the media has reported that she competed in the Miss Universe Pageant. There is also a web site on her with her picture.
Well she had to wear a SWIMSUIT to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant.
It was a one-piece swimsuit but still no one in Afghanistan had a problem with her then. And that was over 30 years ago! ..............................................
So it never crossed my mind
that there would be an issue
with Vida being seen in a Bikini
as Miss Afghanistan. Vida never thought that it would be a problem either or that it would cause such a controversy. If I thought that there was going to be a problem then I would never have submitted her application as Miss Afghanistan. None of the Afghans in America that I am friends with never said anything either.................................................
There is more to the competition than just Swimsuit.
There is Evening Gown, Interview, Talent and National Costume.
Swimsuit is only a SMALL portion of the pageant.
A contestant has to be strong in ALL CATEGORIES to win the title....................................................
Vida never told news reporters that the Afghan Embassy in Washington asked her to represent Afghanistan in the competition. Governments do not choose who is going to compete in a pageant. The Miss Earth Pageant Organization is the one who puts on the pageant and they are the ones who can say who is going to be competing in the pageant. The Miss Earth Organization is the one who asked Vida to compete in the pageant. ...............................................
However,
We decided to get Vidas passport updated because I was thinking that after the pageant she might be asked to go to Afghanistan and help with the refugees or help the Orphans in the country. The Washington Embassy knew that Vida was going to be representing Afghanistan in the pageant and we even sent them the Official Letter from the Miss Earth Organization telling them that.
She received her passport within days
with the Aghan Embassy wishing her goodluck.
This was not a big deal for anyone.................................................

Through the various pageant titles that I have held throught the years, I have been able to raise millions of dollars for various Charities throughout the world. As the reigning Ms America I have volunteered at many charity events to helped raise money for the children of Afghanistan. The Afghan people were always kind to me and I was also put on the invitation to help bring more people to the event. So I just assumed that the Afghan people were favorable towards beauty queens..................................................
So because of my own experience, I thought it would be a good idea for Vida to be Miss Afghanistan so she could use the title to help raise money for the children of Afghanistan and for various Afghan Humanitarian Causes. We also thought that as Afghanistan is being rebuilt that they need to make the enviroment safe and healthy for the Afghan people....................................................
As for Vida winning the pageant?............................
Vida is a strong contenter whether she
is representing Afghanistan or if she was representing another country.
She is very good in competition
and this is only the second pageant she ever competed in.
Yet she is a natural and very unrehearsed.
However most of the contestants in the pageant have a lot of
pageant experience and many have already competed and have been
a runner-up in the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International
Pageant. So it will be a really exciting pageant to watch.
I believe that Vida - on her own merit -
will be a top 10 contender and possible
top 5 winner in the pageant.......................................
But one never knows because it will depend
on if she can concentrate on the pageant
and forget about the controversy...........................................
Vida is aware of the controversy that has happened from her
competing in the pageant and it will be her decision alone as
to whether or not she wants to still compete in the pageant......................................................
When she returns to the USA, as an option we can also change her title to.................................
Miss Afghanistan USA....................... Not a big deal to do!.............................................
Vida has the flu right now
so that will probably have an affect
on her ability to compete well during the competition. .........................................................
It also depends on the judges.

"If it was a different day,

So if a girl is lucky enough to win a crown,
then she should use the title and crown to help others.
